(Un)Intentional

Exhibition text-
This exhibition will consist of four large-scale graphite works on paper that explore the possibilities of line.
A line with no purpose or figurative qualities. Unintentional, automatic and instinctive.
Originally produced on a domestic scale alongside dozens of off-the-cuff sketches, Ugarte has edited the final selection to just four marks. And, in a gesture akin to Baldessari’s use of sign painters, Ugarte has had them reproduced buy a commercial draughtsman using the original graphite technique but on a 100:1 scale.
These are conceptual self-portraits. An unintended aside becomes the artist’s hand writ large – the line becomes the drawing. On the gallery wall it takes on a new life as the intended end of the process.
